The Gap Timber Floor Restoration Project: Bringing a 1960s Turpentine Floor Back to Life

There's something incredibly rewarding about restoring original timber floors rather than replacing them. Many older Brisbane homes were built using beautiful Australian hardwoods that simply need expert care to reveal their true character again.

One of our recent completed projects in The Gap is a perfect example. This 1960s home featured original Turpentine timber flooring that had seen decades of daily use. While the floor remained structurally sound, years of wear, old repairs, and previous treatments had left it looking tired and uneven.

With the right restoration process, we were able to completely transform the floor while preserving its original charm.

Project Overview

Location: The Gap, Brisbane

Timber Species: Original 1960s Turpentine Hardwood

The Challenge

Professionally restored 1960s Turpentine timber floor in a home at The Gap, Brisbane, after sanding and applying a premium satin/matt finish.

Like many homes built during the 1960s, this property had solid hardwood flooring with plenty of life left in it. However, years of foot traffic, furniture movement, and previous maintenance had left the surface showing significant wear.

Rather than replacing the flooring, the homeowners chose professional restoration to preserve the original timber while giving it a fresh new look.

Services Completed:

  • Professional timber floor sanding

  • Berger Pakstop application

  • Loba 2K Duo Satin/Matt finish

The result was a beautifully restored timber floor with a rich, natural appearance that complements the home's original character.

Careful Preparation Makes the Difference

Every successful timber floor restoration starts with thorough preparation.

For this project, we professionally sanded the entire floor to remove old coatings, surface wear, and imperfections while preserving as much of the original timber as possible.

Special attention was given to the kitchen area where Berger Pakstop was used to professionally fill nail holes and small imperfections before the final sanding stages. This created a cleaner, more consistent finish across the floor while maintaining the character of the original timber.

Finished with Loba 2K Duo Satin/Matt

To protect the restored flooring, we applied Loba 2K Duo Satin/Matt, one of the industry's premium two-component water-based finishes.

This finish was selected because it offers:

  • Excellent durability for busy family homes

  • Low-VOC, environmentally friendly protection

  • A natural satin/matt appearance

  • Outstanding resistance to everyday wear

  • Long-lasting protection without overpowering the timber's natural beauty

Instead of creating an overly glossy surface, the satin/matt finish enhances the warmth and grain of the Turpentine timber while providing modern protection.

The Transformation

The difference between the before and after photos speaks for itself.

Years of wear, filled repairs, and a tired finish have been replaced with a smooth, even surface that showcases the natural colour and character of the original hardwood.

One of the most rewarding aspects of projects like this is seeing original Australian timber preserved rather than replaced. With professional sanding and premium finishes, floors that are more than 60 years old can continue performing beautifully for many years to come.
